At the start of the pandemic, Congress passed The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) which allowed people to stay on Medicaid, even if they do not meet the qualifications. This policy was created to ensure individuals could receive necessary healthcare services during the pandemic. The goal was to reduce the number of uninsured individuals during this difficult time.
As part of an year end spending bill, signed into law in December 2022, Congress set an end to the continuous enrollment provision on March 31, 2023.
This means that individuals who have been able to stay on Medicaid without meeting the qualifications will no longer be able to do so and may lose their coverage if they don't meet the eligibility requirements. Additionally, states that accepted the enhanced federal funding must now resume disenrollments beginning in April.
This policy change could cause millions of people to become uninsured again after having coverage throughout the pandemic due to this provision.
